Virat Kohli Enters 15,000-Run Club as India Crush West Indies in First ODI

Virat Kohli has added another remarkable milestone to an already extraordinary career. The Indian batting star became only the second batter in ODI history to reach 15,000 runs, joining Sachin Tendulkar in the elite club during India’s opening ODI against the West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram.

And Kohli did not stop at the milestone. He produced a breathtaking unbeaten 139 off just 88 balls, including 10 fours and nine sixes, as India chased down 296 with eight wickets and 50 balls to spare.

A Milestone Arrives in Classic Kohli Style

Kohli came into the match needing 59 runs to reach the 15,000-run mark. He reached the landmark with a boundary off Alzarri Joseph, becoming the fastest batter to 15,000 ODI runs.

The achievement came in Kohli’s 303rd ODI innings, significantly quicker than Tendulkar, who needed 377 innings to reach the same landmark.

For a player who has spent much of his career setting new batting standards, the moment felt fitting. Yet Kohli later made it clear that personal milestones were not what drove him.

“My focus has never really been on these milestones,” Kohli said after the match, stressing that his priority remains contributing to the team.

Kohli’s 55th ODI Century Lights Up Thiruvananthapuram

The Virat Kohli 15,000 ODI runs milestone was impressive enough, but his innings became even more memorable when he completed his 55th ODI century.

Kohli reached three figures from just 74 balls, accelerating dramatically during the second half of his innings. His nine sixes were the most he has hit in an ODI innings, underlining just how aggressively he approached the chase.

After spending the early part of his innings building momentum, Kohli shifted through the gears and took control of the chase. He eventually finished unbeaten on 139, sealing India’s comfortable victory with successive boundaries.

Shubman Gill Joins the Party

Kohli was not the only Indian batter to make headlines. Captain Shubman Gill produced an impressive century of his own, scoring 110 from 108 deliveries. Gill and Kohli put together a dominant 151-run partnership from 132 balls, effectively taking the game away from the West Indies.

The partnership also highlighted the changing face of Indian ODI batting. Gill's aggressive approach at the top and Kohli's experience in the middle combined perfectly to make a difficult chase look surprisingly straightforward. India eventually reached 300 for two in 41.4 overs, winning with 50 deliveries remaining.

West Indies Start Strong Before India Fight Back

Earlier, the West Indies had put together a competitive total of 295 for seven.

Openers Justin Greaves and John Campbell gave the visitors an excellent platform, combining for 135 runs. Greaves went on to score his maiden ODI century, making 101 from 108 balls, while Campbell contributed 62.

India eventually found a way to break the partnership through Kuldeep Yadav. The spinner finished with impressive figures of four wickets for 40 runs, helping India regain control during the middle overs.

Amir Jangoo's unbeaten 58 from 43 balls helped the West Indies recover and push their total close to 300, but it was not enough once India’s top order got going.

Another Chapter in Kohli’s ODI Legacy

The latest Virat Kohli ODI record adds another extraordinary number to his career. Kohli is now second only to Tendulkar on the list of players to reach 15,000 ODI runs. He also extended his record for ODI centuries to 55 and became the first batter to cross 7,000 ODI runs on home soil, according to reports following the match.

What makes the achievement particularly notable is that Kohli is now playing international cricket only in the ODI format after retiring from Tests and T20Is. His return to the 50-over game could hardly have been more emphatic.

India Take 1-0 Lead

The victory gives India a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series against the West Indies. The second ODI will be played in Guwahati, followed by the third in Chandigarh.

For India, the result was about more than simply taking an early series lead. Kuldeep's four-wicket haul, Gill's century and Kohli's spectacular return combined to produce a near-complete team performance.
