Drone Exposes Exam Cheating Network at Maharashtra Junior College

Academic malpractice in examinations is hardly a revelation in India. Yet, when parents and relatives become active participants in the deception, the episode assumes a far more unsettling dimension. Such a spectacle unfolded recently at a junior college in Chousala, located in Maharashtra’s Beed district, where technology, quite ironically, became the whistleblower.

On Tuesday, as Class 12 students sat for their English board examination, an unusual scene was taking shape outside the campus. According to officials, family members gathered around the college premises and attempted to assist students by slipping handwritten notes, commonly called chits, through classroom windows. What might have once gone unnoticed was instead captured by a surveillance drone deployed by the Education Department.

The aerial footage presents a stark tableau. The college stands amid open terrain, with classroom windows easily accessible from the outside. Groups of individuals can be seen hovering near these windows, reaching in to pass slips of paper. The moment the drone swoops closer, several figures scatter in haste, attempting to evade identification.

Authorities confirmed that the drone was part of a preventive monitoring initiative aimed at deterring unfair practices during examinations. However, the sheer scale of the footage, reportedly spanning nearly three hours, suggests that the malpractice was neither fleeting nor accidental. Beed District Magistrate Vivek Johnson stated that a formal inquiry has commenced and assured that stringent measures would follow. “We are examining the recordings carefully. Appropriate action will be taken to curb such misconduct,” he remarked.

This episode rekindles memories of a notorious incident in Bihar in 2015. During board examinations there, relatives and acquaintances were photographed scaling school walls to supply answer slips to candidates inside. The images circulated widely, igniting national outrage. Allegations even surfaced that certain law enforcement personnel had accepted bribes to facilitate entry into examination halls. In the aftermath, approximately 500 students were disqualified from appearing in the exams.

The recurrence of such incidents underscores a troubling paradox. Education is intended to cultivate integrity and intellectual rigor, yet the desperation to secure high scores often erodes ethical boundaries. When guardians, traditionally seen as moral anchors, participate in subversion, it signals a deeper societal fissure.

The use of drones in Beed marks a technological countermeasure against entrenched malpractice. Whether this innovation will serve as a lasting deterrent remains to be seen. What is evident, however, is that vigilance is evolving. As institutions harness surveillance tools to safeguard academic credibility, the message is unambiguous: shortcuts may be attempted, but they are no longer invisible.
